Average UK procurement salary rises to £41,000

The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) has released a salary guide and procurement report based on research that was carried out in October 2014.

The survey's respondents were procurement professionals from across the country, 61% of whom said they had been awarded a pay rise in the last year. This has brought the average salary for procurement workers up to £41,000.

The average procurement sector salary increase last year was 2.5%. The average across the whole of the UK economy was 1.7%, which indicates that procurement professionals are thriving financially.

Average salaries according to position

After revealing the £41,000 industry average, the study went on to detail the average salaries for different procurement positions:

  • Buyer: £27,000
  • Senior buyer: £35,000
  • Category manager: £42,000
  • Head of procurement: £64,000
  • Procurement director: £89,000

The study commented: "Unsurprisingly, salary and bonuses increase with seniority and are higher in the private sector, and in London and the South East. Average salaries and bonuses are lowest in the public sector, but here we also see more employees offered flexible working conditions."

Over 3,000 professionals took part in the survey, almost half of whom were fully qualified CIPS members – and thereby MCIPS-accredited. CIPS members who wish to become MCIPS-accredited must formally apply to have their membership upgraded. The data shows that, on average, professionals with full MCIPS accreditation currently earn 23% more than those without.
